I’ve been self-quarantining for three weeks now. I haven’t experienced any symptoms for coronavirus but I still make sure to adhere to the rules as much as I can. I haven’t left my house other than for essential errands. I make sure when I grocery shop not to hoard, but to grab enough food and supplies to last at least two weeks, so I can minimize going out in public as much as possible. I always wear a mask, gloves and sanitize everything I touch. When I run around my neighborhood, I make sure to move whenever someone is running on the same side of the street as me. I haven’t seen any of my friends or family- only people that live in my household. So, whenever I see people on social media doing the exact opposite, it’s hard to keep my cool.
It’s infuriating actually. I have a life too, you know. I don’t enjoy being at home days on end, but I do it because I care about myself, my loved ones, essential workers and our society as a whole. Sometimes, I forget what day of the week it is. Every day feels like a really long Saturday. But, I stay indoors anyways, as much as I possibly can.
Waking up and scrolling through social media seeing people “quarantining” yet are hanging out with different friends every single day. It’s not fair. You don’t get to cheat the system. That’s not quarantining. This isn’t vacation time nor is it extra time for you to hang at friends’ houses. It’s disrespectful to all of the healthcare workers, grocery shop workers, janitors, and everyone still having to go out in public every day to keep our society healthy, fed, clean and our economy running.
In the news, the number of cases and deaths continues to climb. Millions of people across the world are losing loved ones, some not even able to say goodbye because coronavirus is so highly contagious. Doctors and nurses are losing their lives saving other peoples’ lives. It’s extremely unfair and it’s absolutely heart-wrenching.
Yet, some people continue to be ignorant. This is not a political hoax, this is not a really long Spring break, this is real life. People are dying all over the world, and some people choose not to stay home? Remember, staying home is a privilege many people across the globe don’t have. It’s so easy, yet so many are not complying.
I am praying life can resume back to some sort of normalcy soon. This is a difficult time for everyone and I hope we can come together as a country to flatten the curve by practicing safety measures and staying indoors.
